Walnut Cookies (Oreshki)
Traditional sweet cookies filled with caramelized condensed milk.
The Story of Oreshki
Oreshki trace their origins back to the Soviet era, when homemade desserts relied on simple ingredients and special metal molds that gave cookies their distinctive shape. These sweets became deeply associated with family celebrations and childhood memories, as mothers and grandmothers prepared them for birthdays, holidays, and festive gatherings.
Oreshki are crispy butter cookies shaped like real walnuts. They are made using a special patterned mold called Oreshnitsa . Each “walnut” consists of two baked cookie shells, filled generously with Dulce de Leche (caramelized condensed milk, known in Russia as Sgushchyonka ). Sometimes, a whole walnut is hidden inside before the two halves are joined together.
These sweets are crispy on the outside, with a buttery flavor that pairs perfectly with the rich caramel filling. Many variations include walnuts, cocoa, or even a touch of cognac for deeper flavor. Today, Oreshki remain one of the most beloved Russian desserts, bringing nostalgia, comfort, and joy with every bite.
More than a dessert, Oreshki carries memories of childhood, family traditions, and generations gathered around festive tables.
